     L’art de laver ou nouvelle maniere de peindre sur le papier is attributed to the engineer H. Gautier (1660-1733), also known as Gauthier de Nîmes. In this early work, the first one published in France which deals specifically with wash drawings of “the drawings sent to the court” and in which the colors “combined, each in its place, form a very pleasant color causing each part of the drawing to stand out”. In thirteen short chapters he spells out how to make the colors and the main laws of the “spatial organization” of layouts. The main point of his discourse is centered on legibility and the conventional codes of the colors used for architectural works, insisting for example on the importance of identifying and placing all preexisting ruins “and the old fortifications” on engineers plans by indicating them with dotted lines. Ten years later he published a more ambitious version of it in Paris at the presses of Christophe Ballard under the title L’art de dessiner.
