The book published by Georg Messerschmidt in Strasbourg in 1550 went back to the Vitruvius edition which had appeared in 1543 under his name. He added Guillaume Philandrier’s Annotationes on De architectura published in Rome in 1544, then re-issued in Paris in 1545. Moreover he leaned on the Parisian edition, for he reproduced the cross-section of the Trajan column which does not appear in the first edition (IX, 2). The resulting composite aspect of the illustrations would be erased by the publisher from Lyon, Jean de Tournes ; he went back to the principle of having Vitruvius’ text precede the Annotationes in the augmented edition of Philandrier he produced in 1552 but with no troubling illustrations.
