Herbert Mitchell revealed the existence of an extremely rare edition of Philibert De l’Orme’s treatise printed in Paris in 1603 by the bookseller Guillaume Auvray. Active from 1572 on, this bookseller died in 1606 ; he published works from classical antiquity and books on medicine and religion ; not, apparently, books on architecture. According to H. Mitchell, this edition has to do with a reprint or unsold copies of the 1576 edition, embellished by a new title page with a frame engraved with scenes of the life of the Virgin Mary and of Christ. The copy he analyzes belonged to the English architect Sir Henry Wotton, who left his annotations.
