In order to finish Narbonne's ramparts, started under Louis XIII, François I had the subsisting Roman remains, which mostly came from the Gallo-Roman necroplis, collected up and used as building material

« Die statt ist vast in die vierung gebauwen, mitt einer alten, vesten, dicken ringmauren umbgeben, darinnen auberthalb viel schöne (antiquiteten) alte sachen eingemauret gesehen werden. »
= “The town is vast, built on a crossroads and surrounded by high, strong and thick city walls; from outside the town, one can see many fine old things (antiquities) which have been incorporated into these walls.”
