The phallic motif is found in two identical drawings which belonged to Peiresc (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Collection Dupuy, ff. 98 and 131)

« Contra l’Amphitheatro di Nimes si trova scolpito un fascino à guisa d’animale per la parte dietro, con una briglia attorno la glande et le rene sostenuta da una figura che vi sta soprà la radice della coda, come se fosse sopra un sedio. »
