« Iungo amphitheatro ædificium antiquum quod la maison carree vocant. Forma ejus est eJteromhvkh, quadrata quidem, sed quæ in longitudinem nonnihil vergit. Latera decem columnis fulciuntur : frons, & pars frontis obversa, sex. Tectum ex magnis lapidibus compositum est, deambulantibus accomodum. Plotinæ id excitatum à Traiano dudum viri docti demonstrarunt : inprimis ex Spartiano in Hadriano, vbi inquit. Per idem tempus in honorem Plotinæ Basilicam apud Nemausum opere mirabili exstruxit. Et veteri inscriptione, quam Aquis Sextiis exstare ferunt in qua non Basilica, sed ædes sacra dicitur ».
= “Besides the amphitheatre, there is the ancient building known as the 'Maison Carrée'. It is rectangular, having indeed four sides, but two of which are slightly longer than the others. Ten columns support the front and back, and six the sides. The roof is made of large stones and one can walk on it. Scholars have recently shown that this house was built by Trajan for Plotine. The printed version of Spartian's’Life of Hadrian' contains the following mention: 'At the same time, an admirable basilica was erected near Nimes in honour of Plotine'. There is also an ancient inscription at Aix which mentions the house, not as a basilica, but as a sacred building.”
