Remarks

The circus aedicule described by Gervase of Tilbury in the 13th century no longer existed in the 16th century; only the obelisk remained, the upper part of which had been moved to the suburb known as the Faubourg de la Roquette, where it was taken by several authors for an altar dedicated to Diana

« Extra oppidum, loco, qui vulgo la Roquette dicitur, supra duas columnas erat Ara illa prægrandis, execrandaque, Cæsari Augusto dicata, in qua imitari solitus est, Hispanorum sacrificandi mos, nempe vt quotannis certis temporibus duo immolarentur iuvenes, qui ad hoc Sacrificium erant dedicati, sumptuque publicò egregie saginati : eorum cruore peracta mactatione aspergebatur populus, qui huic execrando sacrificio aderat. »
