« Die statt ist mechtig alt, unndt haben auch die Römer ihren gedacht, als sie Garites nenneten, wie dann Ptolemaeus Agen die hauptstatt Garitum nennet. Man sichts woll an der alten stattmauren bey Sant Stephans kirchen. »
= “The town is very old. The Romans knew it; they called it Garites and Ptolemy called Agen the capital of the Garites. The ancientness of the town is clearly shown by the old city walls near the Church of Saint Etienne.”
