= “About two hundred paces from the town, beyond the Saint Germain Gate, I saw yet another beautiful, old, Roman building, known as the 'Gallian Palace' ('Palatium Galieni' or 'Galerne' in Latin or 'Palais Galien' in French). It is shaped like a long egg and constructed with small stone blocks, like the first one and also like the buildings in Augst, near Basel. There is no doubt that it is an amphitheatre. It is 370 feet long and 230 feet wide. In honour of the emperor Gallian, after whom the amphitheatre is named, the name 'Galieno' is also used to designate the whole region.”
