« Li suoi ornamenti antichi de’quali se ne vedono ancora le vestigie, erano il Coliseo, che fu edificato nel corpo della città da uno delli prefetti di Cesare, per rappresentare spettacoli a lui ; ma ora è quasi tutto sotto terra, e se ne fa poco conto, essendo state levate tutte le pietre e le figure, e lo acquedotto che per molte miglia fuori della città vi portava l’acqua dentro, che rispondeva ancora nel soddetto Coliseo. Ma ora non se ne vede altro che alcuni volti, ben pero grandi. »
= “The remnants of the ancient edifices can still be seen, amongst which the 'Coliseum' [amphitheatre], which was built in the heart of the city by one of Caesar's prefects so he could benefit from the entertainments shown there. Now it is almost entirely buried and little notice is taken of it; the stones and statues have been taken. There was also an aqueduct which brought water right into the said 'Coliseum' [amphitheatre] from many miles away; today only a few arches remain of it, though some are impressive.”
